Andrea Bergart is a visual artist and designer in New York City.  Bergart’s paintings reference diverse visual traditions including woven textiles, urban fashion, boundary lines on basketball courts and geometric abstraction. Her involvement in fashion and Downtown Girls Basketball (an all-women basketball community) inspired her to make art highlighting female and male professional basketball players and basketball culture.

In addition, Bergart has created multiple public artworks ranging from murals on working cement trucks in Brooklyn, New York to murals painted on basketball courts in Providence, RI, Conakry, Guinea and New York City.

Bergart received a Fulbright Scholarship to Ghana, West Africa where she researched the bead and textile industries. Bergart returned to West Africa in 2016 to participate in the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation artist residency program in Senegal.  She has also partaken in the Tilleard Projects residency in Lamu, Kenya where she created an artwork on a traditional dhow sailboat sail, and in 2018, she received a US embassy grant to travel to the United Arab Emirates to lead solar printing workshops with students and community members. Bergart's work has been exhibited in New York, California, New Orleans, Boston and the UK and has been included in the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

“ Since early childhood, participating in sports has been a large part of my life.  My art deals with ideas that relate to these athletic experiences, which include the relationship between body and movement through space, as well as the focused mind-state of an athlete while performing. My paintings utilize the female form and abstract painting language to create seemingly unrecognizable environments.

I paint seeking an image that condenses and sharpens a poignant experience of what both artists and athletes call “being in the flow”.  These painted states of consciousness relate to meditative practices as well as peak performances of physical activities and sports.  The mind and the body are equal participants, yearning to coalesce into an expression of what it feels like to be human, feminine and deeply conscious.”
