Help Support the Project here!I spent last year in Ghana as a Fulbright scholar. While there I researched the bead industry and designed fabric with a leading textile company. However, my most rewarding experience was painting a mural in Mamobi, one of the poorest suburbs of Accra. Painting alongside my friend Simon (a sign painter by profession), we shared aesthetic interests, ideas, hard work, and lots of water. With the pure water girls cheering my name, the neighborhood kids washing my brushes, other Fulbrighters joining in on the painting and a few passer by's stopping to watch, I was able to complete the 40 foot mural in 2 weeks. Everybody in Mamobi knew about the mural and, everyone that I talked to, liked it. The project grew from simply being an art piece on a wall, to an entire community activity.
I am hoping to return to Ghana to paint a second mural in Mamobi. To complete this mural, I will collaborate with local sign painters and fabric designers. I intend to strengthen previous relationships with the local community, bring beauty to an impoverished neighborhood and establish connections between US and Ghanaian artists. Long term, I hope to establish a network of artists linking the US and Ghana and an infrastructure to support this exchange.
In order to accomplish this goal, I am asking for people to provide financial assistance. I have limited resources to fund this myself and I hope that others will see the value in the project. I consider this an investment in Ghana for a number of reasons. First, this mural will bring joy and color to a neglected neighborhood. In addition, it will expose community members to a broader understanding of art and its power in a community. I hope for this project to both celebrate Ghanaian culture and artists while engaging them with a foreign perspective. Lastly, I hope for this experience to serve as a pilot for a long-term artist exchange between the US and Ghana.
Thank you in advance for your support!!
